University of Waterloo acquires UWaterloo.xxx Domain to protect its image

Many Universities around the world have been snapping up .XXX domain name to protect their trademark rights and also their image,and the University of Waterloo makes no exception .

 

The University of Waterloo has joined other universities in registering .XXX domains, in an effort to prevent pornographers from exploiting its name and its trademark. So far, the university acquired only one .XXX domain - UWaterloo.xxx . "UWaterloo" is a registered trademark of the University as of November,2011. The strange thing is that the University of Waterloo did not secure the .xxx domain in the "Sunrise" period, when any brand owners with trademark rights were able to protect their trademarks by purchasing their corresponding dot triple-x domain names. According to whois records, UWaterloo.xxx domain name was registered on December 6,2011, the day ICM Registry made the  .XXX extension available for public sale.

 

The domain name is inactive and it will not host any content.

 

Other Universities and schools also rushed to register their .XXX domain names. llinois State University registered  IllinoisState.XXX, RedBirds.xxx and StateYourPassion.xxx. Penn State University also acquired four .XXX domain names: Penn State, PSU, Nittany Lions and The Pennsylvania State University, while East Carolina University registered a total of eight .XXX domains, such as eastcarolina.xxx, ecu.xxx, eastcarolinauniversity.xxx, eastcarolinauniversitypirates.xxx and leojenkinscancercenter.xxx.

 

Another University who decided to protect the school's trademark from being used pornographers is the University of Notre Dame, who decided to register four .XXX domains, notredame.xxx, universityofnotredame.xxx, fightinirish.xxx and domer.xxx,spending on them $1,319.96.

 

Even though many Universities rushed to protect their trademarks and decided to register .xxx domain names, other Universities opted to closely monitor the Internet to see if anyone infringes their trademarks.
