ICANN updated the new top level domain program statistics to state 329 registrants already signed up with ICANN’s new TLD Application System (TAS).
Each registrant could make applications for up to fifty top level domain names. Therefore theorily speaking, you would probably find 16,450 new TLDs in the domain market.
However, a great number of registrants are likely just for 1 or 2 top level domains. Besides, not every applicant would come out seeing his/her TLD launched eventually. Part of new TLD applying requests will have to be given up on account of government regulation. Let aone there might also be duplicate applications from competing entities.
It appears that the 1,000 to 1,500 evaluation made by domain industry players remains a favourable guess.
