The 16th annual Webby Awards, "the Internet's highest honor" according to the New York Times, announced this week that nominees will be revealed April 10 and comedian and actor Patton Oswalt (Young Adult, Ratatouille) will host the ceremony and hand out the spring-like trophy on May 21.

The coveted international prize for the Internet's best in websites, interactive advertising, online film and video, mobile and apps, the Webby winners will be announced May 1 and the ceremony follows on May 21 on the last night of New York City's Internet Week.

More than 10,000 entries came from over 60 countries for the 100 categories. The success of the event can be measured in the number of media impressions for voting on nominees, which has doubled over the last couple of years from 750 million to two billion hits on the website.

Voting for the Voice Awards will open to fans April 10 and close on April 26. In addition, winners are awarded a Webby by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences, which selects the nominees. These Web industry experts include the head of the Huffington Post site Arianna Huffington, mobile phone inventor Martin Cooper and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone.

For the first time, the 2012 Webbies show will be live-streamed on WebbyAwards website, an appropriate move considering the award. An app to watch the webcast on iPhones and iPads is available free at iTunes.

The awards ceremony features the famous 5-minute acceptance speeches that accommodate the number of awards. Past winners have included Google, Twitter and Flickr. The prizes will be presented at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom starting at 5:30 pm ET and will include performances to be announced.
